  7.        Stac Unveils Stacker for Windows and DOS. New Release Provides  Tools  for
  8.        Monitoring and Tuning Performance Enhancements.

  11.        CARLSBAD,  Calif.,  October 26, 1992 - Stac Electronics (NASDAQ:STAC),  the
  12.        leading  supplier  of high performance data compression  for  IBM  PCs  and
  13.        compatibles, today announced the availability of Stacker  3.0  for  Windows 
  14.        and DOS. This new version, which  installs  from Windows or DOS, enhances 
  15.        Stacker's disk doubling capabilities with increased performance, data 
  16.        security and new tools that enable users to  monitor  and tune  the 
  17.        compression and performance of their systems.  "Stacker has  been designed  
  18.        for  the Windows user who isn't necessarily out of  disk  space," said  
  19.        Gary  Clow,  Stac's  president  and  chief  executive  officer.   "By 
  20.        installing  Stacker from the start, Windows users get the benefit of  using
  21.        our  new  monitoring tools that function like the gauges on a car dashboard
  22.        to keep tabs on the disk drive."

  24.        Monitoring Gives Insights into Drive Performance:  Stackometer 
  25.        Windows users can monitor their systems with the new Stackometer, a set  of
  26.        real-time gauges showing disk capacity, compression ratio and fragmentation
  27.        levels.   The  Stackometer  can display any  or  all  of  a  user's  drives
  28.        simultaneously, providing useful feedback at a glance. DOS  users  can  get
  29.        information  on  their systems with a new tool that gives drive  statistics
  30.        based on the compression ratios of various file types.

  32.        Flexible Setup for Less Technical and Advanced Users Alike
  33.        "Stacker  for  Windows  and DOS caters to the needs  of  a  full  range  of
  34.        users,"said Anne Galdos, Stacker product manager.  "We've made installation
  35.        much  easier for less technical users who simply want to double their  disk
  36.        capacity, and we provide the tools and functionality for advanced users who
  37.        want to customize and maximize system performance."  Stacker now offers  an
  38.        Express Setup that Stacks a system with minimal user interaction.  This can
  39.        be  accomplished from either Windows or DOS.  In addition, Stacker provides
  40.        comprehensive,  context-sensitive on-line help in  both  Windows  and  DOS.
  41.        Stacker's  Custom  Setup  offers  the  more  experienced  user  a  host  of
  42.        configuration  options for maximum control These options  include  expected
  43.        compression   ratio,  cluster  size,  EMS  support,  and   path   statement
  44.        modification.  Custom Setup also provides users the ability to  tune  their
  45.        systems from maximum speed or maximum compression.

  47.        Tuning:  Customizing Compression for Optimal Performance
  48.        Stacker  now allows users to maximize the performance of their  systems  by
  49.        tuning  the  speed  and compression ratio.  The default setting  gives  the
  50.        fastest  performance and uses the least amount of memory.  By changing  the
  51.        settings, users can opt for more compression - up to 10 percent - with  and
  52.        only  a small decrease in speed.  This means that on a 200 MB drive,  users
  53.        can  gain  up  to  40  MB  of  additional  space.   In  a  typical  Windows
  54.        environment,  this might mean being able to add two new  applications.   In
  55.        addition,  users of faster machines may wish to maximize their systems  for
  56.        compression,   since  for  them  the  speed  tradeoff  is  likely   to   be
  57.        imperceptible.

  60.        Password Protection
  61.        Users   can  password-protect  Stacked  drives  for  either  read-only   or
  62.        read/write access.  This feature offers security for all files on a Stacked
  63.        drive.  By choosing read-only, users can allow others to read files but not
  64.        to  alter the data.  Read/write access allows users full access to the data
  65.        providing they know the password.

  67.        Read and Write Stacked Floppies on Any System:  Stacker AnywhereÖ
  68.        Stacker  for  Windows and DOS allows users to both read and  write  Stacked
  69.        floppies,  Bernoulli disks, Syquest cartridges, Flopticals or any removable
  70.        media  on  any  PC, even one where Stacker is not installed.  With  Stacker
  71.        Anywhere, data can truly be shared across all PCs easily and transparently.

  73.        Support for 2 Gigabyte Disk Drives
  74.        Stacker for Windows and DOS now supports Stacked drives up to 1 gigabyte in
  75.        size,  yielding  2 gigabyte Stacker drives.  Previous versions  of  Stacker
  76.        were limited to 512 megabytes per Stacker drive.

  78.        Faster and More Flexible Stacker Optimizer
  79.        Stacker's  disk  optimizer  has  been improved  to  provide  a  substantial
  80.        increase in speed.  In addition, the optimizer has been enhanced, providing
  81.        visual representation of the defragmentation process on screen, similar  to
  82.        popular disk utility products. A new quick defragmentation option has  been
  83.        added to speed the process even further.

  85.        UnStack
  86.        With  Stacker  for Windows and DOS, users now have the ability  to  UnStack
  87.        compressed disks. Designed primarily for corporate software evaluators, the
  88.        UnStack command automatically returns the system to its original state.

  90.        Transparency
  91.        Stac  has  made several enhancements to make Stacker's operation even  more
  92.        seamless  than  before.   Stacker Setup recognizes Windows  permanent  swap
  93.        files  and  handles them automatically.  The Automount feature  means  that
  94.        Stacked   removable  drives  are  immediately  ready  to   use.    Improved
  95.        synchronization  means  Stacker detects changes to a user's  configuration,
  96.        and automatically updates system files.

  99.        As  with  all  Stacker products, Stacker for Windows and DOS is  compatible
  100.        with all standard disk drives, utilities, applications, memory managers and
  101.        caching programs.

  103.        Price and Availability
  104.        Stacker  for Windows and DOS will begin shipping October 30.  The suggested
  105.        retail  price  is  $149.  An upgrade release is available  at  a  suggested
  106.        retail price of $49.95 through retail channels and direct from the company.
  107.        The  upgrade release requires that an earlier Stacker version be previously
  108.        installed.   Stacker  for Windows and DOS version 3.0 is  fully  compatible
  109.        with all Stacker hardware.
